A flexible, fuel efficient and highly redundant electric power solution you can afford.

Cost

The entire system uses standard components, which are easy to source and replace. The vessel no longer need a main switchboard. Generator size can be reduced.

Redundancy

By using a Ring-Net solution, where each generator and thruster has its own switchboard, a single failure will only result in losing only one generator or thruster instead of half the number installed.

Existing technology

Using years of experience and existing technology gained from both the Quadro Drive and Ring-Net solution, Norwegian Electric Systems had all the components needed to build a new era in Maritime operations.

DC-Distribution

A DC distribution system allows variable speed generators, which increases fuel efficiency and allows for higher exhaust temperatures. High exhaust temperatures are vital for the exhaust catalyser to operate correctly.

Flexibility

The Odin`s Eye® allows for individual protected DC buses to operate with either open or closed bus-ties.

Battery

Batteries are interfaced against the DC distribution via a DC/DC converter to ensure all battery strings are running the same current, removing any uncertainty of equal loading of all the battery strings. This increases lifetime for the batteries.

Installation at yard

From having one main switchboard and a number of drives, both are now combined in to one switchboard. This requires less space in the vessel and thereby less cost.

Shore connection

By combining the shore power with batteries, the peak available power can be increased, yielding full operational functionality to the vessel, even when the shore capacity is less than the vessel`s requirements.

Environmental impact

Nox emission requirements and penalties have been already introduced into the marine industry. Tougher regulations usually require more expensive solutions. Odin`s Eye® is different, in a good way!

Odin's Eye®

ODIN'S EYE® is a DC grid solution which allows for the use of variable speed generator sets. The marine electrical market already has DC electrical grid solutions; what makes this solution so special?

“That is easy to explain” says Stein Ruben Larsen, Senior Vice President Sales for NES.

“We have always believed in DC Grid solutions. They work, cut fuel consumption and lower emissions. However, we did not like the technology currently being offered because it was very expensive and limited in what it could do. We knew we could do better, so we set about finding a solution which is less expensive and offers more capability, including improved safety. It turns out we had the answer already. We expanded our Frequency Converter, the Quadro Drive, and connected it in a ring net solution. Instead of being limited to just a two split switchboard, which means drastically over sizing the generators and propulsion motors, we can now split all the essential equipment up into separate autonomous islands. These islands can be configured to work together with closed bus-ties or independently with open bus-ties. Because we are using our existing well proven hardware we can keep our costs very low and avoid the risk of “new product development”. We believe this amazing solution, ODIN'S EYE®, will make it more affordable for more owners who want economic, flexible and reliable solutions”.
